What would you say has you stuck? What is it that you’re trying to be free of?
We all struggle with sin.
True freedom begins with naming your chains.
God breaks those chains.
“Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves those who by nature are not gods. But now that you know God — or rather are known by God — how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do wish to be enslaved by them all over again?”
Galatians 4:8-9
We often grow comfortable with those chains. We become accustomed to the added weight that comes with the chains. When we worship or idolize things other than God, we are shackled to the ways of the world.
Substances, materials, money and so much more become the center of our life. We put our dependence on these things, and we find ourselves severely stuck when things don’t go our way.
I think all these things stem from a sense of control, but soon they start to control you. A glass of wine of margarita to unwind for the day because a necessity when done consistently. It begins with a glass, but on an especially hard day you have two. Maybe you’ll have three drinks the next day. Having the nicest clothes, car or jewelry gives you the control of how people view you. What we often miss if how those materials don’t satisfy the things of the heart. You’re always left wanting more.
In this society, it is easy to feel like you’re drowning in the constant cycle of bills, car/house notes, or all the little things that add up. So we often center our lives around money in hopes of staying ahead of the game. Not that it’s a bad thing to be financially responsible, but it becomes easy to forfeit your freedom and boundaries to work more and more to build a bank account.
